I am the third owner of this 1958 Rambler American.

It is a “Super” and has 28xxx original miles. This car is driven daily.

The car is completely original with these exceptions.

  • Replaced brake master cylinder with new one after purchase.
  • Replaced right front wheel cylinder with new one.
  • Rebuilt the left front wheel cylinder.
  • Replaced front brake shoes and resufaced the drums.
  • Front wheel seals were replaced at the time the brakes were serviced.
  • Upper radiator hose was replaced with universal flex hose by second owner. Lower hose is a correct molded replacement.
  • Both headlights were replaced after one of the originals burned out afew monthsago. Replaced with OE type 6014 lamps.
  • The second owner rebuilt the carburetor and repainted the engine in a non stock light grey.
  • Fan belt was replaced by the second owner.
  • I added aPioneer CD player/ am fm radio hung under the dash with 2 fabricated brackets. I pulled the original toe kick panels out of the car (still have them) and made duplicates out of 1/8” hard board painted flat black to put the speakers in. Still need to screw the panels in using the original screws. You can see the left panel is loose in the photos.
  • I could not bring myself to cut a hole in the right fender for an antenna mast; instead I installed an amplified antenna and mounted it with the adhesive foam that came with it to the front passenger pillar inside the car. Radio reception isn’t that good but I listen to 50’s and 60’s music on CD instead.
  • I painted the “Rs” in the center of the hub caps with red “Testor’s” model paint. The originals had flaked off. The color is not correct but can easily be removed.
  • I replaced the heater control valve.
  • I installed two seat belts for the front seat.

Things “wrong” with the car.

  • Minor, MINOR rust spotson vent window frames. I think this can be removedby buffing, or using 0000 wool.
  • The outside rear view mirror has some pretty substantial pitting but it is correct and does not look bad.
  • The aluminum door sillsare corroded at the front inside of each one.
  • The front bumper has a shallow dent to the right of the right bumper ornament.
  • The left front fender has a crease in the front just above the bend of the bumper about an inch long and 1/16” deep.
  • There are some scratches and chips that have been touched up on the hood, roof and fenders.
  • There are small chips on the front of the car that have been waxed over and some chips around the trunk lid.
  • The rocker panel on the right side of the car was repainted by the second owner with a spray can. It is flatter in gloss than the rest of the car. There is no damage to the panel.
  • On the driver’s seat back, there is a line of very superficial abrasion that does not cut through the threads of the original upholstery. Looks as though someone sat down in the car with a tool in their back pocket. This is very hard to see.
  • There are abrasions on the side of the front seat backs. I was told that this was the result of grandchildren playing in the car. They would fold the seats forward and get into the back of the car. When they did, the doors would shut and the inside door handles/ arm rests would contact the side of the seat backs.
  • The plasticright door handle/ arm restsis broken from contacting the seat back. I have a set that are in good condition that will come with the car. The arm rests will need to be reupholstered.
  • The rubber front floor mat is torn on the driver’s side. This is the result of the second owner repeatedly lifting it to top off the brake master cylinder.
  • The car did not have the optional AM radio. Cars that did not have the option came with smooth black plastic ornaments that were installed on the dashboard in place of where the controls for the radio would have been. Grandchildren of the original owner playing in the car broke and lost these ornaments. The second owner put chrome accessory knobs in these positions. The dashboard is in its original, uncut condition.
  • There is a bump of rust on the driver’s fender adjacent to the rear view mirror. It looks like the door may have been overextended once though there is no damage to the door. I don't know how it happened. The fender was repainted in this area with a black paint that did not perfectly match the original color. This spot has a bubble of rust. THIS CAR IS ESSENTIALLY RUST FREE!

This is a complete disclosure of every minor issue with this little Rambler. The items I have listed are little nitpicky things.

The second owner collected some items that will come with the car:

  1. 5 additional hubcaps, a total of 9. 4 of which are in perfect condition with the exception of the painted R’s.
  2. 3 additional complete 1 barrel carburetors.
  3. 2 extra headlight switches.
  4. A new voltage regulator.
  5. A blower motor speed control switch.
  6. An old generator.
  7. An old fuel pump.
  8. Owner's and service manuals.

Everything works, these are just items the second owner came across and purchased “just in case”.

The car is equipped with a 3 speed manual transmission with automatic overdrive, just back off the accelerator when in 3rd, and it shifts into OD (4th gear). Shifts perfectly! The clutch is in great condition. Idle is smooth.

The tires were in such good condition that I could not justify replacing them. They are original “Goodyear Custom Super Cushions”. This car has the original wiper blades, they work fine. All stainless and glass is in perfect condition. The body of the car does not have one single rattle in it. You can easily speak to passengers in the car at highway speeds with the windows down. Other than the items listed above, the original interior is wonderful. The headliner is in great condition.

With a tiny bit of hunting for minor pieces and an original quality paint job, this car could easily be restored to #1 condition. I have chosen to drive it as it is and it is a pleasure to drive. There is really nothing wrong with the car. It is as excellent an example of an original Rambler American you will find. A 51 year old car with less than 29000 miles on it that really needs nothing. It could justify occupying space on a museum floor.

I think this little Rambler gets more “thumbs up” and smiles from people than cars costingfar more.

A LOT OF FUN TO DRIVE!

The car drives as you would expect a vehicle with less than 30,000 miles to. VERY NICE CAR!

You will not regret investing in this time capsule.
