THE 1958 BUICK

The engine is the 364 cid version of the famous Buick “NailHead� engine. It's a rather unique engine design. Both the valves and the valve covers sit vertical. Most V8 engines have the valves leaned out at about a 30-50 degree angle and the valve covers are mounted at a similar angle. The vertical arrangement allows for a very compact engine design that produces gobs of torque at low RPM in exchange for limited higher RPM capabilities - the extreme turn in the exhaust port results in reduced high-RPM breathing abilities. A side effect of this design is that it tolerates a very lumpy cam (used to help offset the poor exhaust ports) and can run on a higher compression for a given grade of gasoline than a typical engine without knocking and pinging.

Vehicle Condition:

THIS 1958 BUICK LOOKS GREAT. THE ENGINE PROVIDES SMOOTH AND POWERFUL ACCELERATION AND THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS PROPERLY.

This Buick Riviera is 50 years old, so some signs of age are to be expected! The car has been repainted and has a great shine. The original radio, speedometer, odometer and clock do not currently work and no attempt has been made to repair them. This is usual for a car this age. All the other gauges work fine. The upholstery, door panels, head liner, sun visorsand carpet were recently redone and are all in great condition. I noticed a shimmy at speeds over 45mph when I drove the car to photograph it, and some oil spots on the ground when it was parked in my driveway for a week. This is a rare Canada-assembled Buick that was heavily undercoated at the factory. The undercoating did its job and there are no signs of rust damage. This is not a $60,000 Concours Buick but it is a very nice car. Note that the mileage listed above is the odometer reading only and is not necessarily the total mileage for the vehicle.

This Buick turns heads and gets thumbs up virtually everywhere it goes! Overall, both the exterior and interior look fantastic.
