Further back, one of the most underrated cars of the muscle era was the Skylark GS455 Stage 1. For a car which could lean house against virtually anything out of Detroit the cars were subdued, and many enthusiasts simply didn..t give them a second look. Until one ate them for lunch, that is. Numa must have really wanted the car as the dealer only offered $1704.81 on the 1969 Riviera trade-in! Buick thankfully called out the GS455 package directly in the VIN, saving you the hassle of proving what you have like the Chevy guys do. Ignoring the paperwork, you'd need to find the car's serial numbers on the motor and transmission to verify the car is a Stage 1. The front engine pad clearly states that this is the original motor, and the "SS" stamp on the rear pad designates it as a Stage 1 piece. Similarly, the transmission has the VIN stamped clearly and crisply on the driver's side while the Stage 1-specific code BB lies on a tag on the passenger side. Pull the air cleaner to find carburetor number 7040246, exclusive to Buick's ultimate machine. The numbers are right and the performance is there. The fully restored interior looks assembly line fresh. The dash pad is straight and soft, the gauges are clean and all switchgear operates as designed. New upholstery from the carpet up is in place and in as-new condition. Sill plates, window cranks, armrest bases and more are new or reconditioned originals. This is a comfortable, comprehensive and correct cabin. Ducking down to examine the undercarriage you know immediately this is an all clean, all original sheetmetal car. The frame off restoration was demanded by the car..s rarity, not condition! Refurbished steering and suspension components bolt to the correctly finished frame. New brake components from rotors and drums to hardware, lines and hoses are in place. A pair of 70 series Flowmasters offers up the muscle car sound while retaining Buick-like cruising sound levels. Saturn Yellow certainly wasn't the subtle color for high performance cars and on a Buick body it looks surreal. Chrome bumpers and trim are the rechromed originals while the lights and lenses are fresh and new. Stainless trim pieces shine thanks to their careful polishing. The glass is the original Soft-Ray pieces. The 1970 chromed 15.. Rally wheels with G60-15 Polyglas tires make this show stopper of a car even flashier.
