What if you knew the end of performance as you knew it was near? What if you had the forethought and the means to grab one last piece of history before it was too late? And how would you option that car if you were, say, a Buick dealer? We can answer all of the above for you: Francis Joyce of Joyce Buick in Lorain, Ohio special ordered himself a unique TRIPLE BLACK Stage 1 hardtop with all the trimmings.

This is a special car, and if you are Buick fan, ACT FAST. You're looking at the finest UNRESTORED '72 Stage 1 on the planet—that's the original paint, the original engine bay, the original chassis down to the exhaust and the most perfect original interior you'll EVER find.

For those who fully believe performance died in 1971 had better check out their Buick history. Their Stage 1 cars were strong enough to win Motor Trend's top performer award in '72, running mid 14's at better than 100mph—no small feat on an emissions legal motor! Couple that screaming performance with a gorgeous body and you've got one killer muscle car.

Here's how the window sticker lays out the car:

4G37 GS455 Hardtop

35 Special order paint (black wasn't a standard on the Skylark line in '72, and a whopping $113 extra!)

C08 Black vinyl top

248 Black custom trim notchback bench seat interior

B2 Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission

C1 Power disc brakes

C5 variable ratio power steering

D4 AM/FM radio with rear speaker

E6 Through bumper exhaust extensions

F7 G60-15 Goodyear Polyglas white letter tires and chrome plated wheels

H6 Rally firm ride suspension

K3 Speed Alert

N6 Front and rear bumper protective strips

O4 Door edge guards

O6 Sport outside rear view mirrors

U1 Convenience Group (trunk, mirror map, glove box and ash tray lights)

U7 Full rallye gauge package with tachometer

X2 Rallye steering wheel

$52 worth of destination charges brought the sticker price to $5091.45, but what dealer on the planet pays sticker? Out the door (and financed through the GMAC demo plan), the price was $4291.28 after taxes. How's THAT for a discount? It's still very cool to see the ORIGINAL bill of sale listing the customer and salesman as the same person...it sure saves a lot of time tracking down the buyer! Stock #248 also cost $250 a year to insure according to the documentation that comes with the car. Of course, we have the original owner's manual packet, Warranty Booklet AND the original window sticker, too. Interesting story with the paperwork. The Joyce's sold the car in 1979, but held on to all of the original paperwork for the car. Subsequent owners tried to get them to give it up, but they never did. They eventually repurchased the car (they must have known it was coming back someday) and the paperwork was reunited with the car. Does this car keep getting better or what?

But don't take our word for how perfect this car is—it has been judged best GS at the GS Nationals, competing against (and beating) freshly restored cars. Even the GS experts say this is flat-out the nicest GS there is. It was also the cover car for "Buicks Illustrated" for many years. And this car is no pretender. At the GS Nationals, this bad in black GS ripped off a 14.21 on street tires!

Pop the hood and take in this time warp. It absolutely goes without saying ALL of the hard parts are the originals, and the miles rolled onto the odometer so slowly that its last full tune up was when Ma Bell was still whole: The spark plug wires are dated the second quarter of 1982. There's a new Delco battery, fresh plugs, hoses, belts, fluids and filters, and that's it. If it's here the Flint plant bolted it on, end of story. That's the original motor, carburetor, distributor, air pump, air cleaner, paint on the motor, dust on the firewall, you name it. This is a PERFECTLY preserved car.

The original interior simply needs to be seen to be believed. Seriously, we didn't think the General actually made cars this nice in the 70's. The dash pad is straight and soft, the gauges are perfect and bright, all switchgear operates as designed, the radio is loud and draws in stations perfectly and the seats are absolutely amazing with no wrinkles, tears, pulls...nothing. You'll be hard-pressed to find a muscle interior as nice as this one, especially an all-original one.

The undercarriage is amazingly original and shows just how nicely the car was maintained. We found new stabilizer pins and new shocks, but the rest of the components are factory original. That includes the exhaust system, if you can believe it. That's the original undercoating on the dead mint floor pans, original suspension and brake components and the frame. We invite you to come visit the car and see for yourself—this car alone worth the trip.

The finish on this car is astounding. A factory black car with original paint that looks this good? Wow! Flint must have known about the $113 up-charge or they knew it was going to a dealer because there are so few waves, orange peel is minimal, and coverage is excellent. Either way, they definitely went above and beyond the call of duty on this special car. Chrome bumpers and trim pieces are original and flawless. Lights and lenses from the ORIGINAL '72-specific Guide/T3 bulbs to the taillights are like new. Stainless trim pieces shine thanks to their careful polishing. All of the glass is original and perfect. The original chromed 15" Rallye wheels hold their ORIGINAL G60-15 Polyglas tires—no DOT repop markings here.

This is a reference-quality vehicle: gorgeous original paint, a jaw-dropping interior, a mint undercarriage and engine bay, super low miles, and paperwork to back it all up. Buicks in general are on the rise, Stage 1 cars are on a lit rocket and the 72's are getting their due. This is definitely a car you'll wish YOU packed away when you had the chance. Call quickly before someone else does.
