The 1961 Chevrolet Impala was destined to become one of the most memorable Chevrolets of the 1960s by mixing full-size luxury with performance. It was easily distinguished from the other full-size Chevrolets with its triple taillights, crossed racing flags insignia at the center of the rear deck, and the wide side moldings with contrasting insert panels. Three Impala rooflines were employed this year, including a sport coupe with gently sloping front pillars and plenty of glass that became known as the "bubble top."

Today the Chevy bubble tops are favorites of customizers and hot rodders because of their dramatic styling and wide range of power-train options. This '61 Impala coupe is one of the best examples we've seen, and it lets the car's basic shape and original details do most of the talking, enhancing what's already there. From the low stance and billet aluminum wheels to the awesome silver over red color scheme, to the ghost flames on the nose, this car is a high-quality custom that will generate loads of attention anywhere it goes.

Mechanically, the car is all-new with a binder full of receipts for all the work that's been done. And when I say receipts, I'm talking about tens of thousands of dollars in parts and labor, with every single nut and bolt listed. When you buy this car, you'll know as much about it as the original builder does. There will be no surprises here.

The parts used throughout are big names you'll recognize, too: GM Performance Parts, Sanderson headers, Griffin radiator, Billet Specialties, Zoops brackets, Strange Engineering, TCI Automotive, Inline Tube, Ididit, Lokar, and Master Power Brakes.

The engine is a new GM "fastburn" small block V8 crate motor, professionally installed by Jim Crivelli Chevrolet and upgraded with the ZZ430 kit to make 430 horsepower. It's backed by a built 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission, a freshly balanced driveshaft, and a rebuilt Positraction rear end. An all-stainless dual exhaust system with giant polished tips was custom-fabricated from the headers back. In all, there's more than $15,000 worth of work in the professional installation and tuning of this drivetrain, and once you hear it run, you'll know it was worth every penny.

Underneath, the suspension is a completely custom air ride system built by Mease's Custom Car accessories. It features a ten gallon chrome air tank in the trunk, a trick control panel on the dash, and heavy duty airbags at all four corners. The killer stance is enhanced up front by a set of 2-inch drop spindles mounting a set of disc brakes, giving this car a menacing "in the weeds" look. GTX03 wheels from Billet Specialties, 17x7s up front and 18x8s out back mounting B F Goodrich Comp T/A radials. Like I said, the bubbletop shape does most of the talking, and everything that was done to this car merely enhances an already amazing look.

In addition to all those receipts, there's also an album of photos documenting the bare-metal re-spray of the entire car, with more receipts detailing the repairs to the sheetmetal performed by Beckett Bodyworks. Looking at the photos, the guys at Beckett spent an awful lot of time getting this car straight, then covered it with subtle and elegant O'Riley Silver paint and some prismatic ghost flames up front, all accented by that Candy Apple red accent on the side. The effect is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Of course, all the trim, chrome, and emblems on the exterior of the car have been professionally restored or replaced with high-quality aftermarket pieces. All the glass is crystal clear and unmarked, and the final assembly shows exceptional attention to detail with tight gaps and great panel alignment everywhere you look.

Fortunately, the interior is up to the standards set by the rest of the car. Tastefully done in an original style with red and white upholstery, it looks exactly right. Once again, the builder made the right choice by merely enhancing the factory's already excellent design with a few subtle upgrades. There's a lot of jewelry in there from Billet Specialties, a tach hiding down low to the left of the steering column with the air ride controls low on the right, a floor-mounted Lokar shifter, and a modern CD stereo unit hidden in the glove box. Overhead, a new headliner looks clean and tight, the door panels are new, and the vivid red carpet is spotless. A billet steering wheel with a red leather rim finishes the interior beautifully.

This car has attracted a ton of attention since it arrived here at Best of Show Automotive. It's a favorite among several staff members, and it has a trunk packed full of trophies suggesting that we're not alone in loving this car. It's a show-stopper, drives beautifully, has a ton of horsepower, and with that air suspension, it rides like a Cadillac and the ride height can be adjusted to suit your tastes. With receipts and photographs of the build, you know it was done right and with all the right pieces, so you can buy with confidence. It would be almost impossible to duplicate this car for the asking price, and you already know it's a show winner. Why not take home some trophies of your own? Call us today.
