ITS A GREAT PIECE FOR MAKE A $100K CAR
YOU SEE A GREAT CAR FOR RESTORED . THIS CAR HAS ALL PARTS INCLUDE Statement of significanceThis 1928 Chrysler series "72" sectioned display chassis is thought to have been built at the Chrysler Corporation factory in Detroit, Michigan, in about 1927 and brought to Australia to demonstrate the construction and operation to potential buyers and dealers. Nearly every part of the chassis and engine was sectioned to show its inner workings. This included the radiator, gearbox, generator, shock absorbers and rear axle.DescriptionAutomobile show chassis, full size, sectioned, 1928 Chrysler "72" Series, chassis number C.P. 015P, made by Chrysler Corporation, Detroit, Michigan, USA, c.1927

The chassis has a six-cylinder, L head, side valve petrol engine with a cast-iron block. It features Delco-Remy electrics (starter motor, generator and, distributor). The Stromberg updraft carburettor has a centrifugal air cleaner and the steering box is worm and cam. The gearbox has three forward speeds and one reverse behind a single dry plate clutch. The handbrake contracts on a drum at the back of the gearbox. Fisk cord balloon tyres (6 x 18) are fitted to artillery-type split rim wheels with four studs and contracting brakes. Quarter elliptic leaf springs are fitted all around, together with four Hassler friction type shock absorbers.

The starter motor is rigged to turn the motor over slowly by electricity.

He acquired the Maxwell and Chambers Motor Companies in 1923 and the following year produced the 6-cylinder "70". It proved to be a sensation with its 4-wheel contracting hydraulic brakes, 70 mph (113 kph) speed and economical price. In 1926 the range widened then expanded further in 1928 with a multi-tiered range after Chrysler took over Dodge Brothers and launched the Plymouth Four in the low price sector and the De Soto Six in the higher price range. The firm also excelled at Le Mans in 1928 with their six-cylinder roadster coming in 3rd and 4th places behind Bentley and Stutz.

The 1928 six-cylinder "72", of which this chassis is an example, came with a number of bodies including a standard two-door rumble seat roadster, two-door sport roadster, two-door convertible coupe, two-door rumble seat coupe, two-door 4-passenger coupe, four-door 5-passenger town sedan, four-door 5-passenger Royal sedan, four-door 5-passenger Crown sedan, four-door 5-passenger close-coupled sedan, and the four-door 5-passenger Imperial Town Cabriolet. A total of 64,136 Series 72 Chryslers were manufactured in 1928.

Even though this show chassis represents a 1928 Six-cylinder Series "72" Chrysler it was probably made in 1927 as the vehicle was first marketed in Australia in October 1927. All motor numbers for this model were preceded with the letter "J" and ran from J-192001 to J-250000 while the concluding chassis number was C.R. 838L. History notesIn 1929 the then Curator of the Museum, Mr A.R. Penfold, wrote to Mr W.B. Larke of Messrs Larke Hoskins & Co. Ltd to enlist his help in securing sectioned motor car units such as a carburettor, magneto, clutch and gearbox for display in the Museum as there was very little material to illustrate the internal workings of the motor car. It is important to realise that in the 1920s there was a push among museums around the world to focus on "the industrial advance of civilisation" through exhibits such as the automobile and aeroplane rather than natural science. The world's largest and most comprehensive technology museum, the Deutsches Museum, had just opened in Munich in 1925.

It was quite a coup then for the Powerhouse Museum to have this chassis donated by the Chrysler Corporation through their local distributors, Larke, Neave & Carter Ltd, of 177-185 William Street, Sydney. This firm later became LNC Industries Limited, Australian importers and distributers of Volkswagen, Audi, Subaru, Fiat, Lancia and Renault cars.

The Chrysler chassis was sent to Sydney by ship from Adelaide and arrived in the Museum in 1929 but was not officially handed over until 29 April 1930 by
Mr H.B. Phipps, Vice-President of the Chrysler Corporation. The show chassis not only enlightened visitors but was especially valuable as a teaching aid for the automotive apprentices from the nearby Sydney Technical College with which the Museum had established a close relationship across a number of disciplines. The chassis was placed in storage in about 1963 but removed again in 1983 and restored by apprentices in the Mechanical Shop of the NSW Government Motor Garage in Bay Street, Glebe, in 1983. It was officially handed back to the Museum by the Acting State Premier and Minister for Public Works, Mr Jack Ferguson, at a special ceremony. MarksChassis number C.P. 015P.
