1965 Imperial Convertible by Chrysler

One of only 633 made. Originally a Texas car I bought it 23 years ago, garaged ever since and driven about 20,000 miles.

Took it out of storage last week and drove it over 200 miles with no problems.

This car is a good driver or would make a great foundation for a show restoration.

Engine:

Original 413 c.i.d. rebuilt 20 years ago with new crank, rods, pistons, rings, valves, camshaft, lifters, electronic distributor (original distributor included) and oil pump. Engine runs very good and is extremely quiet. No measurable or visible oil consumption may have small leak or two but no puddles. Battery is about 2 years old.

Body:

Solid no rust Texas body. I stripped it to bare metal 22 years ago before painting and there was no rust or filler except for a small crease that was filled on one door. Since then the car was rust proofed and garage kept. There are a few smaller “dings” in the sheet metal but no accident damage.

Chrome is average to slightly below average with some wear showing. The rear bumper has 2 or 3 areas of dents and or creases with chrome getting thin. Front bumper is better but has a scrape on one end.

Stainless trim is generally good and complete with a few smaller “dings”.

Weather strip is original and considered typical for 43 years old.

Paint is 20 year old single stage lacquer in average condition with some nicks and blemishes here and there. The hood has an area that was re-sprayed for repair of a scratch and is detectable with slight off color match. The passenger’s door was rubber out a little too hard which shows.

Power convertible top operates well and is in good condition with good plastic rear window. Vinyl top is in good condition and is about 15 years old. I would not consider it 100% water tight due to window alignment, weather strip etc.

Glass is all intact. Windshield had a small chip repair in the upper right area which is barely visible. Driver’s area has 2 arc shaped scratches from an old wiper frame making contact. It is probably too deep to completely polish out. Left rear window glass has some scratches from someone not paying attention with sandpaper.

Power windows- passenger’s and driver’s windows operate fine, vents and rear windows no longer function, they used to but slowly stopped. Passenger’s window motor was just rebuilt.

Power antenna is an inch from all the way down and does not operate. Never checked into this condition, could be switch, motor, wires?

Transmission:

Believed to be original. Was rebuilt 15 years ago. Operates well. Will leak some after sitting for longer periods. If car sits for over a week or so trans takes a few seconds to engage but is fine after that with no slipping or delayed shifts.

Drive Train:

Operates fine. Center prop-shaft bearing and/or u-joints may be worn. Has a slight vibration on acceleration but smooth while cruising. Rear axle seals were replaced about 6 years ago. Differential has no detectable whine or noise.

Brakes:

Four wheel drum with single master cylinder. Stop the car well, will pull under hard braking.

Steering:

Newer power steering pump and pressure hose. Steering has some play in it and car wonders moderately on the road. Still very drivable.

Interior:

Option code indicates the interior was originally black. Somewhere it was changed to gold/tan. All the seat leather was replaced 15 years ago with “tanish” color but is not believed to be a factory color match and is in pretty good condition. Door panels are original and from another car, they are in slightly below average condition with some 3 corner tears and arm pads that are curling up and cracking. Wood grain is older in condition too.

Carpet was lower quality aftermarket and has faded and has a poor fit.

Convertible top has hard plastic boot covers but I don’t know if the snap in vinyl that goes between them is still around.

Power seats operate but are slow and seem to have directions reversed on the switch.

Dash pad has some cracks and curling areas.

AM radio light comes on when switch is turned old but I don’t think there are any speakers to see if sound comes out.

Speedometer works but is 10 mph fast, temperature and volt meter work, fuel and oil pressure do not work. Clock does not work. Headlights, tail lights, turn signals, tilt wheel and horn all work, odometer and trip meter work. Odometer reads 54,000 miles actual miles are unknown but I think around 90,000. Steering wheel has typical cracks in the plastic. Interior has some squeaks and rattles.

Suspension:

Had rear leaf springs rebuild 20 years ago but they have settled down since then. Have not done much else to suspension.

Exhaust:

None OEM dual exhaust is moderately quiet, not factor quiet. All is intact.

Tires:

Four matching whitewall radials with good tread remaining.
