You are bidding on a second owner, 1971 Comet that was purchased new by my great aunt which she putted around California with for most of the cars life. It is a great cruiser, or platform for a lightweight drag car. The car has a salvage title because my great aunt was hit in the rear quarter panel in 1996 causing $700 dollars worth of damage which was more than the 35 year -old ,worn out six cylinder car was worth according to the insurance company . It was declared totaled , hence the salvage title. After this I became the second owner and had the body repaired, prepped and resprayed in the original color in 2000. The car has been my daily driver for 5 of the 8 years since then and has been garaged for the other three. The paint is still good but not perfect. There are some rock chips and a small section where a bondo repair needs to be re-done. The grille is missing some pieces as the Maverick / Comet grilles are made from flimsy plastic and are impossible to keep perfect .The seats have been re-upholstered, headliner replaced and the carpet is original but still quite good. The car came to me as a well-used six cylinder Grandma car which I then converted to a V8 in 2000 with a 302, C4 and 8-inch rear from a '68 Mustang coupe. To the rebuilt stock 302 I added an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, headers, Petronix coil, and Accel plug wires. The engine has proved very reliable and even knocked down 21 MPG on a road trip. The engine is mostly stock but feels powerful in the 2800lb Comet. I replaced the water pump and thermostat and added a four-core radiator . There are less than 10,000 miles on the new motor. The suspension was also rebuilt at this time with ployurethane bushings a 1" Addco sway bar, V8 mustang coils with a coil removed, KYB shocks (F/R) and mustang leafs in the rear. The frame is very solid and rust-free. The brakes are rebuilt manual drums both in the front and the rear but I am including the disc brakes off a '71 maverick which I intended to rebuild and install but never got around to. Everything needed for a disc brake conversion is there. The steering was converted to manual as the headers interfered with the original power steering hoses. The manual steering is more responsive at speed but does require some effort for slow speed maneuvering. Converting back to power steering is not complicated if you so desire. The wheels are 15 X 7 inch American Racing smoothies with new 225/60/15 tires all around.
I reserve the right to sell locally as it is for sale elsewhere. If you have any questions feel free to call me at (208) 871-6091 |
