"Ask the man who owns one" Exterior Color: Blue with a white top Interior: Lt Blue with Dark Blue/gray Fabric Serial Number:56225484 Mileage: 2369 Engine:352cid V-8 Transmission: Ultramatic" automatic transmission with lockup torque converter & four speed overdrive. This incredible car was purchased new by G. Fred Ziegler who lived at 49 N. Carlise St. in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. We have the ORIGINAL registration from August 9th, 1956. I remember hearing the Packard Commercial on the radio as a little kid and asking my Dad one day, "Dad, what do they mean "Ask the man who owns one" He said, "these are such well made cars that if your thinking about buying one, you should ask someone who already owns and drives a Packard" I said well the guy on the next block who owns the bank and the newspaper has a brand new Black one in his driveway. My Dad said, "we can't afford that car...it cost more than a Cadillac." That made a lastly impression in my mind...I thought that the most expensive cars in the world were Cadillacs. It's a shame that Packard went out of business as they really did build some of the finest cars in the world! We have a Rare 1948 Packard Custom Convertible for sale on Ebaymotors.com and like this car, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it any distance. You have to see and drive this car to appreciate how nice it is! This car does not have air-conditioning...but vintage AC can be installed for $1495.00. The paint, body, trim, chrome, interior, engine compartment, trunk, undercarriage are beautiful on this car. The original factory radio works perfect as does the Power Antenna. Yes...even the clock works in this Packard! It was restored a few years ago and the mileage that shows on the odometer are since the restoration. Not only does this car look great...it drives fabulous. We sold this car a couple of years ago to a wonderful husband and wife in Kansas. When they called us and said they were thinking of possibly selling this car...we jumped at the chance. If you look at the trunk photos, you can see all the books and manuals that will come with this car. Here is some background on Packard that I found on the net.... In 1898 James Ward Packard, a successful manufacturer of electric lamps and transformers in Warren, Ohio traveled the sixty miles to Cleveland, Ohio and bought a new Winton automobile. The trip home involved several break-downs and the last few miles of the journey required the use of horses to pull the newly purchased vehicle home. When Packard later complained offered suggestions to Alexander Winton, Winton replied that if Packard knew so much, he should try building a better car himself. Confident in his knowledge of manufacturing and with some degree of righteous indignation, Packard hired two of Winton's best engineers and formed the Packard Car Company was formed. Their first vehicle was driven on the streets of Warren, Ohio on November 6, 1899. Until 1903, all Packards were powered by a single-cylinder engine. Packard was the top luxury brand in America before the Second World War. Between 1925 and 1940 Packard regularly outsold its main competitor, Cadillac. Packard was regarded as the "social standard of America". 1954 - Packard takes over the struggling Studebaker company in hopes of being able to compete with the "Big Three". 1956 - On August 15, 1956, production ceased on all models except the Clipper. In 1957 and 1958 Packard offered a limited range of models, all produced at the Studebaker plant in South Bend, Indiana and based on Studebaker models. Studebaker continued to produce cars until 1966 but the last year of the once prestigious Packard was 1958. Packard's engineering staff designed reliable, well-made engines. Packard offered a twelve-cylinder engine—the "Twin Six"—as well as a low-compression straight eight, but never a sixteen-cylinder engine. After WWII, they were one of the last U.S. firms to produce a high-compression V-8 engine, the "352," named for its 352 in³ (5.8 L) displacement. In-house designed and built, their "Ultramatic" automatic transmission featured a lockup torque converter with four speed overdrive operation. Packard's last major development was the "Torsion-Level" suspension, an electronically controlled four-wheel torsion-bar suspension that balanced the car's height front to rear and side to side, having electric motors to compensate each spring independently. Contemporary American competitors had serious difficulties with this type of suspension idea, trying to accomplish the same with air bag springs, but eventually letting the option lapse from consumer perceptions. Packard also made large aeronautical engines. We feel for the $ that this is the best buy on Ebay of any Packard offered for sale. We have received many e-mails and phone calls over the past several years wondering why we are running private auctions, which conceal the identities of our bidders to the general public. The answer is simple. We become aware that unscrupulous individuals have been attempting to save auction fees by soliciting other sellers' bidders via unwanted, and sometimes offensive, emails. In order to protect our customers from this illegal and annoying practice, as well as to protect our auctions from such interference, we have elected to use eBay's Private Auction feature, which was designed to alleviate this exact problem. A little about Cars From Yesterday....... We have been collecting, buying, selling and trading vintage cars since 1960.
