DescriptionSuper Rare, Original Drive train, Buildsheet, Ex. Cond. 1969 Plymouth Cuda, M-Code 440 Just some quick history on the 1969 M-Code 'Cuda. In 1969, Plymouth released the 340 & 383 'Cuda models to compete in the increasing market for performance and speed. Although the first Barracuda was released in 1964½, the 'Cuda moniker wasn't adopted into the Barracuda lineup until 1969. Originally called the "Mopar 340" while in development, the popular 'Cuda nickname was later adopted before becoming available to the public. The 'Cuda package was easily recognized by the two distinct twin black hood scoops atop matching hood stripes across the hood. The tape strips also appeared along the lower portion of the vehicle with corresponding call-outs determining the engine displacement. The 'Cuda packaged was inspired by the Plymouth Roadrunner thus earning the name from many popular car magazines as the “Pocket Roadrunner.” The 'Cuda package was mainly developed for street racing, while the Formula "S" was for the driver who appreciated handling. The 'Cuda package shared all the suspension and drive train components found on the popular Formula "S" model, but lacked most high end options which were commonly found on Formula "S" optioned Barracudas. The 340 'Cuda and 383 'Cuda series were targeted towards buyers who found themselves wanting to compete with the Mustang, Camaro, and other pony cars. Plymouth offered the 1969 'Cuda with either the 340 rated at 275 hp or the 383 rated at 330hp. In 1969 the 383 received an extra boost in horsepower due to an improvement in exhaust manifold design and a new camshaft. In 1969, Plymouth's pony car was getting flat out whipped by the competition from Ford and GM. Although Plymouth had dropped the 383 in Barracudas for a few years at this point, it just wasn't enough. The solution? The 'Cuda 440 ! In perhaps the ultimate shoe-horn job of all time, Mopar shoved their 440 Magnum engine in the tiny A-Body Barracuda. This was also the first year of the high performance version of the Barracuda , officially called "'Cuda" by Plymouth. It is a name that stuck and has become muscle car legend. The 440'Cuda was offered strictly for straight-line performance, and due to the snug fit of the 440, left no room for power brakes, disc brakes, and power steering. This left the 440 'Cuda strictly to individuals looking for drag racing or light to light action on the boulevard. The A-body 'Cuda series was only produced one year, making these some of the rarest and fastest Barracudas ever produced. The 'Cuda 440 Special Package, as it was called, was considered a factory race car and covered by a restricted 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. Customers were required to sign numerous releases and warranty papers to even take delivery of these beasts. Only 358 cars were produced, 59 notch back coupes and 299 Fastbacks. All were equipped with Torqueflight automatics. Additional equipment in the 'Cuda 440 Package included: • Console and bucket seats • 3.55 Sure Grip rear axle • Heavy Duty Suspension (HD Torsion bars, HD leaf springs, Front sway bar) • Heavy Duty Shock Absorbers, 1" Diameter front and rear • 14"x5.5" Heavy Duty Steel Wheels • E70 x 14 Wide Boot redline tires • Dual hood scoops and tape stripes in black • Lower body stripes - black • Black grille • 'Cuda 440 callouts Air conditioning, power steering, power brakes and disc brakes were not available with the 'Cuda 440. It was all business! Only (70) of the (299) M-Code Fastback ‘Cudas produced in 1969 are know to exist. They are documented in the 440 ‘Cuda Registry created by Tom Wenstadt. The 'Cuda 440 Registry has (23) known wrecked or otherwise unsalvageable VIN numbers on their list. Only (6) F8 Ivey Green Metallic Cars are known to exist. This includes Notch Back Coupes and Fast Backs. It is thought that the majority of the (70) surviving 1969 440 ‘Cudas “do not” have their original engines. Engine Specs: BH29 M-Code 'Cuda: 375bhp@4700rpm, 490lb-ft@3200rpm. Performance: 440/390bhp: 0-60 in 6.3 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec @ 104.2 mph. Car Life tested the 'Cuda 440 at 0-60 in 5.6 sec, and 14.0 @ 103 in the quarter mile. They were disappointed. It seemed that they just couldn't get the car to hook up. It kept spinning the tires. (Car Life, June/69). Another period road test, reprinted in Musclecar magazine, backs up the 14-flat quarters, but they also tried it with ten-inch slicks, and ran low 12s. Modern street tires are better than those slicks ... And now for this rare 1969 M-Code 'Cuda that we are auctioning here today on eBay Motors. There are a lot of terms that I could use to describe this car but the first one that come to my mind is “Super Rare.” This term gets thrown around a lot on eBay but I feel that this car really fits the bill. I mean come on. Only (299) produced, only (70) know to exist, only (6) in Ivey Green Metallic and the majority of the cars that are left, do not have their original drivetrain. If that doesn’t classify my original drivetrain car as “Super Rare” I don’t know what does. The car shows 26,698 miles which is believed to be original. It is in excellent overall shape including body, paint and mechanical condition. Just freshened up the interior with the following: 1. New dash cap: 2. New windshield; 3. New headliner; 4. What I believe to be the original seats and door panels re-dyed. Recently completed: 1. New universal joint; 2. New gas tank and sending unit; 3. New speedometer cable; 4. New ‘Cuda front and rear floor mats; 5. Installed the correct 14” X 5.5” heavy duty wheels with new and correct E70 X 14” Diamondback Supreme Redline Radial tires. All gauges and lights to include the radio are in working order. The car starts a drives great with the type of power and sound you would expect from a true muscle car. Let me be completely honest here, this car will melt the rear tires if that’s what you had a mind to do. It has that type of raw power. Let’s face it, there are only (70) of these M-Code 'Cudas know to exist and how many of those have their original drive train? It seems like all I see today on the internet are what they call; CLONES, REPRODUCTIONS, RECREATIONS and TRIBUTE CARS. I am not knocking these cars but my point is that it is becoming more and more difficult to find the “REAL DEAL.” However, if you win this auction, that is exactly what you will get, the “REAL DEAL.” Try to find another with the original drive train. Here is what my 1969 M-Code 'Cuda has that you need to know: 1. Copy of Broadcast Sheet, Decoded; 2. Original Vin Stamped Engine; 3. Original Vin Stamped Transmission; 4. Vin Stamped on Radiator Support; 5. Vin Stamped on Trunk Lip; 6. Original Vin Tag, Decoded; 7. Original Body Tag, Decoded; 8. Correct Rear Axle; 9. Correct Heads with Correct Build Dates; 10. Correct Intake with Correct Build Date; 11. Correct Carburetor with Correct Build Date; 12. Correct Passenger’s Exhaust Manifold; 13. Correct Radiator; 14. Correct Water Pump; 15. Original Glass with the Exception of a New Windshield; 16. Original Seat Belts; 17. Original Seats; 18. Documented in the 1969 440 ‘Cuda Registry; 19. Copy of the Complete ‘Cuda Registry. I highly recommend that serious buyers come themselves or send an agent to see this car in person and hear it run. You will not be disappointed.
