u1: Sold Car When Built (Somebody Ordered It)

If the car looks familiar, that's because it's been a staple at Chrysler Classic events for years, and Mopar Muscle tapped it for a four page spread in March of 2004. There are pictures of trophies and awards laid out in front of the car—the previous owners had so many that they threw them away when they downsized their house!

You can see from the decoded tag the car was ordered as you see it down to its full set of restored Hemi steel wheels and restored bottle caps. It's quite an enigma. If you wanted an upscale muscle car, the GTX was definitely the way to go. It looks great with the optional dual mirrors, center console and classic vinyl top. If that was its primary mission, the manual steering and brake systems are an oddity. If you wanted to go fast, as the Hemi, four speed and tach show, then the manual gear makes sense, but why order up the cosmetics to weigh the car down? The car was raced, too—that's why there's a '66 vintage 426 block up front in favor of the original and there was a set of 4.56's out back in the Dana. The original block gave its life for speed, while the 4.56's were chucked in favor of a stock set of 3.54's. Perhaps the original owner tried extra hard to lull people into a false sense of security before separating them from their cash?

The car was in very nice shape when the title was handed over in 1990, and it was driven and enjoyed for years as it was. The decision was made in 2003, though, to make it a top-level contender on the show circuit. The body was completely stripped and expertly massaged before the brilliant coat of paint you see here was applied. Every piece of stainless and chrome was refinished before going back on. Gaps are excellent, the bodywork is nearly flawless, and the overall effect is stunning. The grille and tail panel, both difficult to source in good condition, are gorgeous. The LABOR bill alone for the work was $15,000! That should give you a heck of an idea as to how the car looks!

New Legendary interior items merge seamlessly with factory originals. Those are new door panels, new seats, new carpeting and a new headliner there with the original dash, wheel and center console. The Hurst shifter is correct for a late '68 car as Chrysler had ditched the troublesome Inland units earlier. The console top plates were re-chromed, the dash fascia plates are mint originals. New seat foams mean you'll arrive in comfort while the Hemi makes for an exciting journey!

So how do you get a Hemi car for free? As the owner of a service station in rural Ohio, the previous owner was used to being given derelict cars, bound for the crusher. People would leave them and he'd haul them away for scrap value. With the price of steel down it was more of a public service than a side business! One day, a man wandered in asking for the owner. Having found him, the man asked if he'd take care of his son's car as he was no longer able to do so. Sure, he said, he'd take it to the crusher in the next week or so. The man was puzzled, pointed to the GTX, and said that it needed care, not crushing! The light bulb went off, the man rushed the car home to his garage, and the rest is history. Truth really is stranger than fiction!

Open the hood and you'll see just about every part Chrysler put there. Original black wrinkle finish valve covers are in place and the correct coil and bracket are up front. A nod to his years as a mechanic, he also removed and carefully packed away the original Carter AFB's and the Prestolite dual point distributor in favor of a couple Edelbrocks and a Mopar Performance electronic ignition system. He sourced a second air cleaner baseplate and mounted the ECU in existing holes—there are NO modifications to the car that can't be undone in minutes, and we have the originals! The rest of the compartment is as you'd expect in a top show car, with clean paint on the rebuilt motor, date coded wires, a correct battery and cable set and more. He won with the car in modified class, but a couple hours' work and you'd be in the thick of things in stock!

The undercarriage is as clean as the top, and all new and refurbished components are in place. The exhaust is a custom setup with a pair of mellow Flowmaster mufflers and tips. There's a new fuel tank, new lines and everything else you'd expect on a high dollar restoration.

An odd assortment of options, a racing past, a VERY interesting story, a high dollar restoration—this car's history makes soap opera plots look straightforward! The tale is crazy enough to make the car legendary, while the Hemi under the hood makes the car ultra-desirable.

So let's review: 426 HEMI, 4 Speed, Dana 60, rare & cool color combination, high dollar restoration, multiple national awards = INVESTMENT GRADE MUSCLE CAR! Where do you want your money right now … stocks? Bonds? Paper? NO NO NO NO NO NO. Put your money into something real and desirable. This 1968 Plymouth GTX HEMI is an investment grade muscle car that will bring a smile to your face every time you wax it, drive it, or, God forbid, teach a youngster what HEMI power means!
