In search of ways to leverage the 389, Knudson downsized the flagship Catalina for 1961, shaving 200 pounds of weight and in the process creating a NASCAR champion.

This outstanding 1961 Catalina convertible embodies many of the fruits of Knudson’s vision. The beneficiary of an excellent restoration, it carries the top-of-the-line 389 tri power engine rated at 348 horsepower and a hefty 430 lbs-ft of torque. tri power fanatics, as were this car’s heavy duty 8-lug wheels spinning wide Whitewalls. The Starlight Champagne finish and Tan Clouth soft top are well accented by the contrasting multi-tone interior.

An altogether beautiful example of one of the cars that laid the groundwork for a decade of great Pontiac muscle.
