They proceeded to do so, and by 1962, the desired results - increased sales - were a reality. For example, Hurst shifters were found on Pontiacs with floor mounted manual transmissions and larger more powerful engines found their way into many Pontiac and other GM models. Leading the effort was Pontiac chief engineer John Z. DeLorean who insisted that performance and styling would sell cars. DeLorean designed the GTO, but Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes is credited with pushing the idea through the politics at GM. Wildly popular upon its introduction, Pontiac created an instant legend with the GTO, a status that has followed the car through time. To this day, the GTO remains one of the most sought after and collectable cars of all time. The birth of the GTO represents the beginning of the Muscle Car era, a craze that still enjoys tremendous popularity! Offered for sale here is a superb example of one of GM’s greatest creations, the 1967 GTO Convertible! Equipped with a 1967 date-coded WT 400ci V-8 fitted with the famous Tri-power carburetion producing 360 horsepower, 4-speed manual transmission, factory bucket seats with console, factory Rally gauge cluster with dash tachometer, original Pontiac Rally II wheels, power DISC brakes, power steering, AM/FM radio with front and rear seat speakers, and so much more, this is without a doubt one of the finest and nicest driving GTOs available anywhere. Finished in stunning Starlight Black over correct black interior and new black top, this GTO boasts a fresh body-off restoration just completed in June of 2009! Fully documented in receipts and photographs, this complete car was disassembled and rebuilt from the ground up! The body was professionally prepped, primered, 3-stage block sanded, painted Starlight Black, clear coated, 3-stage wet sanded, and buffed to a brilliant, smooth finish! The frame was sandblasted and repainted black, then fitted with all new body mounts, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. The engine and transmission are completely rebuilt to stock performance with new clutch, complete fuel system including gas tank, and all new exhaust. The suspension, weather stripping, chrome bumpers, grill, headlights bezels, and BF Goodrich tires are all new!. You’ll find some original trim, glass, and interior parts, but nearly all major components are new or rebuilt! With a great blend of performance, eye appeal, sound and classic Muscle Car vibe, this bright shining GTO will be right at home at a local show or cruising to your favorite weekend getaway spot. The astute collector will NOT miss this unique opportunity!
