They proceeded to do so, and by 1962, the desired results - increased sales - were a reality. For example, Hurst shifters were found on Pontiacs with floor mounted manual transmissions and larger more powerful engines found their way into many Pontiac and other GM models.

Leading the effort was Pontiac chief engineer John Z. DeLorean who insisted that performance and styling would sell cars. DeLorean designed the GTO, but Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes is credited with pushing the idea through the politics at GM. Wildly popular upon its introduction, Pontiac created an instant legend with the GTO, a status that has followed the car through time. To this day, the GTO remains one of the most sought after and collectable cars of all time.
