The Judge.

In naming the top-of-the-line GTO "The Judge," Pontiac seemed to be saying that they were the final authority on performance, that they were the arbiter of all that was badass, and that sooner or later all the other musclecars would have to deal with them. Ultimately, history seems to show that this is the case—the GTO Judge is the benchmark by which most other musclecars are measured, and it was definitely no pretender.

As originally conceived, The Judge was intended to be a low-priced Goat, maybe a pillared coupe in a single color, with rubber floor mats and only the hottest performance equipment, a recipe that had served Dodge well with the Super Bee. However, the Judge that debuted in December, 1968 wasn't so basic, instead becoming an option package on the GTO hardtop or convertible. But The Judge included a host of features that cost far more when ordered individually.

This first-year 1969 GTO Judge tells you all you need to know about Pontiac performance in '69. From the Ram-Air hood to the decklid spoiler, this car screams high performance. Of course, the thumping 400 cubic-inch V8 under the hood certainly helps, and there is no question about the car's credentials when you see that screaming Carousel Red paint and Judge-specific graphics. It has been recently and extensively restored, with a good deal of the work being done in our own shop, so you know it's right. At the moment, it shows 4052 miles, all since restoration, so it is completely sorted and ready to enjoy.

Standard engine in the Judge was the 366-horsepower Ram Air III evolution of the GTO's 400 cubic-inch V-8. An under-dash knob now closed the hood scoops in wet weather. Pontiac trimmed a few dollars from the base price by deleting trim rings from the standard Rally II wheels, but all Judges had the regular firm GTO suspension and wide-tread Polyglas G70x14s. Options included a close-ratio four-speed ($195) or automatic ($227) transmission, Positraction ($63), front disc brakes ($64), power steering ($100), and a hood-mounted tach ($63), as well as any other option available on the GTO. They built more than 72,000 GTOs in 1969, but only 6,725 Judge hardtops, making it a very rare car.

This particular Judge is very well equipped:

361 Saf-T-Trac limited slip differential
382 AM pushbutton radio
391 Rear speaker
414 Covered headlamps
431 Deluxe seatbelts
444 Tach and clock gauge cluster
511 Power disc brakes
532 Tinted glass
554 The Judge package

It is also equipped with a Muncie 4-speed manual topped by a Hurst T-handle shifter, with the original 10-bolt 3.55 Positraction rear end out back. The engine is a correctly date-coded 400 with a 1969 Ram Air III casting number. Speaking of the engine, the engine compartment is factory fresh, from the foam on the air cleaner that seals it to the Ram Air hood, to the Pontiac turquoise paint on the engine, to the authentic reproduction battery. Trim tags and decals have been correctly placed. Much of the work on this car was done by the same guys who restored our recent national prize-winning 1970 Trans-Am Ram Air III. You'll be proud to show this Goat off no matter where you go.

The chassis is as spotless as the engine compartment, with clean, shiny floors that aren't camouflaged by thick undercoating. Factory-style markings and labels have been expertly applied—it's a shame that it's all hidden under the car. The brakes are rebuilt, the exhaust is new, and it rolls on a set of fresh BFGoodrich 235/60/14 radials. Documentation includes a copy of the build sheet from PHS.

A recent CNN article on smart investments reviewed the 10 muscle cars that have appreciated the most since 2000, a list that included the 1969 GTO Judge. It is without a doubt a blue-chip investment that will always have value. Unlike some fad cars that spike collector interest then fade to obscurity (six-figure Amphicars, anyone?), the Judge has always been something special and always will be. And for pure driving excitement, nothing beats a fully restored and sorted car for years of care-free enjoyment. Get in, turn the key, and it's 1969 again. You can almost hear Flip Wilson calling, "Here come da Judge!"
