Background Information

The big news for 1971 was the introduction of the 455HO engine coded LS5 which was standard in the Trans Am. The HO was a new version of the 455, a high-performance version with an aluminum intake and a lot of Ram Air IV components. The famed Muncie M-22 "Rock Crusher" 4-speed manual transmissionwas standard on the Trans Am for the first time in 1971.

A newly designed Honeycomb wheel became available as an option on the Firebird line. The wheel was made of polycast plastic molded over steel and painted Argent Silver. A pentagon-shaped center cap and stainless beauty rings completed the look.

Only 2,116 Trans Ams werebuilt in 1971 with a breakdown of 885 produced witha manual transmission and 1,231 produced with an automatic transmission.
